GPS Trajectory Compression

Massive volumes of GPS trajectory data or tracks generated by GPS devices, PNDs or smartphones have led to difficulties in storing and transmitting such data. We're continuously improving both the performance and compression rate of our GPS trajectory streaming algorithms to further reduce the memory footprint. On average, today we're able to store 5 GPS records into a single byte!

Software Library (M4 API)

CloudMade can provide you software tools for both encoding and decoding GPS data streams efficiently:

  • gpx2gpc Encode (compile) GPX formatted files into our proprietary .m4 binary file format
  • gpc2gpx Decode (extract) .m4 files back to the GPX format

Our M4 tools consider only GPS the data fields required for map matching purposes: longitude, latitude, date and time, and optionally number of satellites and HDOP.
