Who we are

CloudMade was founded in 2007 to enable developers build location enabled applications and services.

Co-founder Nick Black is passionate about creating tools and services that enable developers to deliver remarkable location based experiences across all device types - from mobile to web and beyond. Being one of the earliest driving forces behind OpenStreetMap - the free wiki world map - and a developer in the past, Nick has gained a unique insight into the world of community created content and a deep understanding of developers' needs for location products. As Head of Products, Nick is responsible for leading the company’s product vision and strategy, servicing an ever growing community of developers - from entrepreneurs building the next great mobile app, to developers in large companies working on the latest handset, satellite navigation device or fitness product.

Juha Christensen, who serves as Chairman and CEO, bas been building mobile operating systems for most of his career. He founded Symbian, went on to lead the charge in the early days of Windows Mobile, ran part of Macromedia, helped build the largest System Integrator in the mobile industry (Teleca) and helped create a success out of Trolltech and Qt, which is now being incorporated into the next big operating system to hit the world, MeeGo. Today he is as passionate about great user experiences as ever, focusing his time on helping developers, large and small, build great products and services utilizing the CloudMade platform.

Christian Petersen, CloudMade's VP of Community, has over 20 years of experience within the online and mobile app industry. He has worked internationally as an expert on mobile applications and advergaming for such companies as Macromedia, Microsoft, Symbian, Kellogg's, LEGO, Mars, and Nestle. His insight into working with consumers, software developers and large brand advertisers has enabled him to understand needs, wants and benefits for all three groups. This is reflected in Christian's current role at CloudMade where he is responsible for identifying the needs of our 23,787 developer community and transforming them into unique development and monetization opportunities that leverage location.

Our deep involvement with location, open source and community based projects is complemented by a significant amount of experience within the mobile and internet industries, drawing upon the expertise of our CTO, James Brown and our CFO, Michael Farrow.

CloudMade and OpenStreetMap (OSM)

Maps are an essential part of our location platform. CloudMade leverages rich OpenStreetMap data and completes it with various datasets from alternative sources to provide developers and app publishers with the most comprehensive and accessible location data, in order to support the most compelling geo-enabled products. As big believers in community projects and crowdsourcing, we have actively supported OpenStreetMap by providing public relations and legal support, sponsoring developer events and contributing to the OSM code base.
